Meet Bobbi-Jo

Bobbi-Jo Molokken, LISW, CCTP (she/her) provides psychotherapy in the state of Iowa and is the founder of Compassionate Curiosity Counseling. As a seasoned clinician she’s been working in the mental health field for over 18 years.

Bobbi-Jo practices from a neurodiversity-affirming perspective, which recognizes that there are natural variations in how humans learn, communicate, process information, and move through the world. There is no single “right” way to think, feel, or function.

Her goal in therapy is to help clients reconnect with their true selves. Walking beside them as they build a life that supports their individual needs and passions. She enjoys providing therapy that’s adaptive and allows for a balance of practical skills and support,‍ ‍while also doing deep internal work. The deep work can allow us to release any hurts from the past we may be carrying and gain insight into how our reactions/emotions we have in the present may be connected with our previous life experiences.

Bobbi-Jo believes therapy is political. All of our life experiences are impacted by the systems all around us. It’s helpful to name the dynamics in our environments and their impact on our individual lives. She practices from an LGBTQ+ affirming approach, and she strives to create a space where people of all identities feel respected, supported, and able to show up fully as themselves.

Her Approach to Therapy

Bobbi-Jo’s approach to therapy is collaborative, curious, and compassionate.

She believes that therapy works best when it is a partnership. If you imagine the therapy journey as a car ride, she sees the client as in the drivers seat and her role is as an attentive copilot. She can provide options for routes we can take, can help point out potential roadblocks ahead, provide reflections about progress, but the client makes hte final decisions on the destination and how we get there.

A central part of Bobbi-Jo’s work involves helping clients slow down and develop greater awareness of the patterns in their lives that shape behaviors and reactions. These patterns are often connected to past experiences, nervous system responses, and the environments people have lived within.

At times the work involves emotional or trauma processing and reflection. At other times it may involve practical tools that support regulation, communication, and everyday functioning.

Bobbi-Jo also believes it is important to acknowledge the broader systems and contexts that influence our lives. Family expectations, cultural messages, social environments, and systemic pressures and failures can all shape how people understand themselves and the challenges they experience.

When not in the therapy office…

Bobbi-Jo lives and works in Decorah, Iowa, which she maintains is one of the most beautiful towns in the state (several magazines articles agree).

Outside of providing therapy services, Bobbi-Jo also owns Embrace the Muchness LLC, where she provides ADHD coaching, creates ADHD related resources, and provides clinical consultation and professional development training to fellow mental health professionals.

In her free time, she can be found starting new crafting hobbies or collecting supplies for future creative projects. She is currently hyperfixated on making polymer clay earrings and prior to that spent several years sewing clothes and was a pattern tester. Even while not working, she enjoys discussing or reading about mental health, therapy, neurodiversity, and the nervous system.

When she finds time and sits still long enough, she enjoys rewatching New Girl and Schitt’s Creek.

She is married and a parent to 2 ADHD children (with very different presentations). Her home also hosts a rescue dog (Nova), an adopted leopard gecko, and three fish tanks.
